Exercise: Remind Me

These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

----------------------------

In less than 400 words, create a scene in which a person is suddenly
reminded of an earlier experience, an event long buried by the years.
And it all comes back to life, in living color.

----------------------------

Perhaps an old melody, a film clip or an overheard conversation
triggered the sudden memory. Your character should feel, once more, a
strong emotion such as shame, pleasure, regret, embarrassment or
nostalgia. Show your readers why an unremarkable event triggered a
very potent reaction.

----------------------------

When writing your critique, think about your own reaction to the
memory. Did you feel amused, repelled, sympathetic, or indifferent?
In what way would you change the action, reaction or the plot line?
Would you want to read further?
