These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

In 400 words or less, show someone bring presented with a new item
that someone else thought he or she needed. How does the protagonist
– or person who receives the item - react?

______________________

In your scene, the reader should learn the circumstances for the new
item. Is it given in honor of a special occasion such as a birthday,
graduation, wedding, retirement, or future trip? If the protagonist
is surprised by the item, the reason it was given should become clear
as the plot rolls along.

______________________

In your critique, tell the writer how you reacted to the scene. Could
you picture the situation? Did it remind you of a similar gifting in
your own life? Did the reaction make you laugh, wince or feel the
reaction of the protagonist?
