Exercise: Let's Make a Deal

These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

In 400 words or less, create a scene in which two sides are in
stalemate over an issue and must find a compromise.

______________________

In a family, a club, a business, a union, a government - any type of
organization - a crisis often arises that calls for a quick solution.
In your story, show us a point of contention or concern, and the
positions of the characters, groups or factions. Will your
protagonists find a way forward? If so, show us how they came to an
agreement. If not, show why the gap wasn’t bridged.

Tip – Your readers will more easily follow the action and/or dialogue
if you limit the number of protagonists or speakers.

Critique: Were you clear on the problem and the need for a solution?
Did the flow of thoughts or the dialogue keep you interested in the
negotiations? Were you comfortable with the “deal?” Would you read
further if the writer extended the story?
