These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

In 400 words or less, provide a scene that opens
just as something is thrown. Then draw the reader
into an engaging story that develops after the throw.

______________________

There are the obvious choices like weaponry,
sports equipment, and dice. People might also
throw a party, their voice, and even handy
articles not designed for flight. Introduce
your character(s), and unfold an interesting
scene invoked by the throw.

______________________

Critique: Did the author do a good job of
drawing you into the story? Did the scene
meet the goal of having the opening throw start
a reaction of events? Could you offer the
author any suggestions to tighten up the
writing or make it more engaging?
