Exercise: Old School or Newfangled

These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

Exercise: In 400 words or less, write a scene where
it is critical that one of your characters must figure
out how to utilize an unfamiliar item or tool to
complete a task.

______________________

Consider objects that were once commonplace, but
now are rarely seen, or alternatively that might
belong to one culture, but be alien to another. Your
character is presented with some challenge that
must be overcome by determining how to use the
item. Show us how the character attempts to solve
the dilemma, and the ultimate outcome.

______________________

Critique: Did the character seem genuinely
confused? Could you picture his or her efforts?
Do you have suggestions for a smoother read?
