Exercise: Night Moves

These exercises were written by IWW members and administrators to provide structured practice opportunities for its members. You are welcome to use them for practice as well. Please mention that you found them at the Internet Writers Workshop (http://www.internetwritingworkshop.org/).

Exercise: In 400 words or less, create a scene in which a DJ, busy doing
his station's late-night show, is startled when a famous rock star wanders
into his booth.

______________________

Surprise visitors at a radio station are unusual but not rare. But a
drop-in guest may create a tense situation. After all, why is he
there? What’s his mood? Is he acting strangely? Does he reveal that
the DJ said or played something that made him happy, sad, angry,
nostalgic, or confused? How does your DJ handle this situation?

______________________

Critiquing: In your critiques, note how well the setting is
constructed. Were you shown authentic characters acting in
believable ways? What did you learn from the characters’
interactions? Does this scene show or imply the immediate or
long-term results from this visit? Would you read further? As
usual, pay attention to all the technical concerns that play
into good writing.
